Outgoing interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry is currently meeting Fiji’s interim PM Voreqe Bainimarama to explain his sudden resignation from the regime along with his two party members.
Chaudhry leaves Government with interim Minister for Tourism Tom Ricketts and, Local Government minister Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi after the decision was unanimously agreed to at the Fiji Labour Party council meeting in Nadi yesterday.
As stated by the party, the three will now concentrate on the party’s preparation for the next elections in March next year.
Ricketts has confirmed that he and Vayeshnoi will meet the PM after Chaudhry.
“Chaudhry is expected to explain to him why we have decided to call it a day.”
FLP President Jokapeci Koroi said it was in the best interests of the party to disengage from the interim Government to allow it to “effectively engage with the population with respect to the draft People’s Charter as well as prepare for the next general election”.
The decision effectively ends the Labour Party’s participation in the interim Government.
