Fiji’s Military Chief of Staff, Colonel Mohammed Aziz is now acting as the military commander in the absence of interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
This has been confirmed by Government spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni.
Col Aziz is now the first Indo Fijian to act in the position.
“There’s no doubt that Colonel Aziz is fit to be in that post in the absence of the military Commander,” Major Leweni told FijiLive.
He said the position was given to Col Aziz because of his position as the military chief of staff.
“He’s a senior officer and also the chief of staff at Strategic Headquarters so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t get it.”
Col Aziz headed the army’s legal services before being appointed Chief of Staff.
Bainimarama, who is currently attending the coronation of Tonga’s King George Tupou V, will return this weekend.
