The father of Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has revealed he was behind the naming of his new granddaughter Sunday, drawing his inspiration from the muse of a famous Australian artist.
Kidman and country crooner husband Keith Urban welcomed Sunday Rose Kidman Urban into the world on Monday in the United States.
Antony Kidman said that Sunday was chosen from several names on the celebrity couple's short list. He and his wife made the suggestion after hearing about the muse of Australian artist Sidney Nolan, Sunday Reed.
"The name struck me as being a nice name for a woman, so my wife and I mentioned it," he told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.
"It was among other names being considered but they decided that was the name they wanted."
Kidman said he had read about Reed, whom he described as a "key mover and shaker in the arts around the beginning of the century," and her husband John.
Reed was a prominent patron of the arts in the southern state of Victoria early last century. She ran a house and property near Heidelberg in Melbourne as an artistic salon.
She associated with the Australian artists of the day such as Arthur Boyd and Charles Blackman and Nolan, with whom she conducted a nine-year affair.
The Daily Telegraph said the Reeds were sexually adventurous, engaging in threesomes with Nolan and another artist, Sam Atyeo, after their marriage in 1932.
Reed committed suicide in 1981, at the age of 76, 10 days after the death of her husband.
In January, Kidman and Urban were spotted taking in a Nolan exhibition in Sydney.
Sunday Rose is the first biological child for 41-year-old Kidman, who adopted two children with former husband Tom Cruise.
The child's second name, Rose, is in honour of Urban's late grandmother, the singer's brother Shane told Australian radio.
"It's a wonderful, wonderful thing. I'm so, so proud," Shane Urban said.
