Months of squabbling between Fiji’s interim Government and Kadavu Holdings Limited came to an end today.
This is after the presentation of a cheque valued at more than $1 million in outstanding rental arrears to KHL.
The presentation was done by interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to KHL chairman Ratu Sela Nanovo in Suva, even though the amount was not disclosed.
However, Ratu Sela said that the cheque was estimated to be over $1 million.
“I just want to finalise that our tenancy agreement with KHL is over and that all outstanding money owed to them is now being paid,” the interim Attorney-General said.
Sayed-Khaiyum said the interim Government had no regrets about pulling out of the tenancy agreement, saying the parties had a mutual understanding before this was done.
More than six months rental payment was owed to KHL after the interim Government decided not to occupy the building.
The tenancy agreement was reached during the Qarase government’s time in office after it was decided most that government offices would be relocated there.
However, when the interim Government came into power cost-cutting measures were put in place and it was decided that relocating would cost government a lot of money. It was also decided if the interim Government did not honour its agreement than outstanding rental would be paid.
Ratu Sela also said that the building would be up for rent again unless and until the interim Government cleared everything with KHL.
He thanked the interim Government for its commitment to pay the arrears.
