The Bua Provincial Council will reveal its position on the Charter and proposed new-look Great Council of Chiefs today.
The council heard presentations from the committees promoting the two initiatives of the interim Government during the first day of its meeting in Nabouwalu yesterday.
Newly-appointed chairman Alipate Radrodro said Bua will make known its stand at the end of its meeting.
Of the 14 Fijian provincial councils, eight (Naitasiri, Lomaiviti, Cakaudrove, Nadroga, Rewa, Namosi, Tailevu, Ra) have rejected the new GCC promulgation, two (Kadavu, Ba) have decided to await the court ruling on the GCC.
Only the Macuata Provincial Council has given its support, while Serua does not have enough installed chiefs to be represented in the new-look GCC.
The Lau Provincial Council will meet on June 4.
The GCC taskforce will visit the Rotuma council next month, however the chiefs of Rotuma have already indicated their support to interim Indigenous Affairs Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
Meanwhile, the GCC taskforce, led by Ratu Jo Nawalowalo, received many queries from members of the Bua council.
Nabouwalu chief, Tui Vuya, Ratu Amenatave Rabona questioned the decision of the interim Minister for Indigenous Affairs to have the ‘bose vanua’ (chiefs’ council) of each province select three representatives to the Great Council of Chiefs.
“The GCC is an instrument of Government and is legislated while the ‘bose vanua’ is not. How will he mitigate the Fijian vanua and Fijian administration?
Former Senator Ratu Kinijoji Ramasima was appointed to be Radrodro’s assistant.
Radrodro is a general manager of the Fiji Sugar Corporation in Lautoka.
