About $F150,000 has been allocated for the renovation and facelift of Fiji’s oldest and first library, the Suva City Carnegie Library.
National celebrations are also in the pipeline to mark the library’s 100th anniversary in September this year.
The Suva City Council’s media liaison officer, Jillian Hicks, confirmed a special committee has been established to put together a programme for the celebration, which will include a variety of activities for people of all ages and from all walks of life.
“There will be competitions such as swimming, oratory, essays, drawing, reading for the primary and secondary schools and entertainment from different cultural groups, international groups, guest speakers, librarians and so on,” she said.
William Thompson, a great grandson of Andrew Carnegie who is the founder of the library, has been invited as chief guest for the celebration and has been promised VIP treatment by the government of the day.
Renovation works to the library include painting, change of roof, floor varnishing, tinting of windows, upgrading of work station, air-conditioning, setting up of internet café, landscaping and also a change of lights.
