A former pool cleaner with a history of mental illness was convicted by a New York court on Tuesday of stalking and harassing Hollywood actress Uma Thurman and ordered to undergo psychological observation.

Jack Jordan, 37, was found guilty of stalking and aggravated harassment but cleared of two other counts of aggravated harassment. He faces up to a year in jail when he is sentenced next month.

During the five-day trial, Jordan's lawyer had portrayed his client as a harmless eccentric, according to the New York Times, while prosecutors told the jury that Jordan had hounded and frightened the 38-year-old actress.

In his testimony, Jordan described visions in which he believed he was destined to meet Thurman and live with her and her two children.

During the trial, witnesses testified that Jordan had threatened to kill himself unless he could see the "Kill Bill" and "Pulp Fiction" star.

Jordan turned up at a set in Manhattan where Thurman was filming in November 2005 and tried to get into her trailer before leaving a note under her door.

Prosecutors said Jordan also turned up at Thurman's Greenwich Village home, where she lives with her two children, and repeatedly rang the doorbell.

On one note, Thurman told the court, Jordan wrote "my hands should be on your body at all times."

Jordan told the court that he developed a crush on Thurman after watching her in "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen."
