Fiji-born Solomon Island Police Commissioner Jahir Khan says he’s prepared to stay on for another term if the Government wants him.
Khan’s contract expires at the end of next month.
“I’ am prepared to extend my time with the Solomon Islands Police Force if the government wants me for another year,” he told the Solomon Star in an interview.
The Government had earlier indicated that Khan, controversially appointed by the former Sogavare regime, must leave at the end of his contract.
This was after it backed down on a threat to terminate the Fijian from the job.
Khan said he’s meeting Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua next Tuesday to discuss his future with the Solomon Islands police.
“I am ready to accept whatever decision the Government comes up with,” he said.
“If the Government wants to keep me for another year, I am willing to stay on.”
Khan was controversially appointed by the Manasseh Sogavare led government after it removed Australian Shane Castles as commissioner.
At the height of attempts to oust Sogavare from office late last year, Khan cancelled leave for all officers then took leave himself to travel to Fiji.
While Khan was in Fiji Sogavare was ousted from office and he hinted that he would leave for the US after his contract expired to join his family.
Meanwhile, he said he will leave for Vanuatu next week to attend the Melanesia Spearhead Group (MSG) Police Commissioners’ meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for the 17 and 18 this month.
