Alitalia's board of directors decided to postpone its choice between two rival bidders -- the Italian airline Air One or the European giant Air France-KLM -- to rescue the near-bankrupt national flag carrier.
The board will meet again on Friday, Alitalia said in a press release.
The new meeting will follow talks on Thursday between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi in Rome.
Transport Minister Alessandro Bianchi said earlier Tuesday that "a few more days to study" the two offers were needed amid concerns over unions' reaction to a restructuring plan for the airline, which is losing one million euros a day.
Bianchi said he has called a meeting Wednesday afternoon with trade unions in the transport sector.
