The announcement of the new Cabinet lineup is not expected until just before the New Year due to the absence of the interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

Bainimarama met President Ratu Josefa Iloilo before he left the country on Monday to visit troops in Sudan, Sinai and Iraq. He returns on December 24.

The secretary to the President’s Office Rupeni Nacewa declined to divulge details of the discussions at Government House last weekend. He confirmed though that the new assistant ministers in the reconfigured Cabinet will have to be sworn in by Iloilo.

He said he is not aware of any further meetings planned between Bainimarama and Iloilo before January 1, 2008.

The new Cabinet set-up of 14 ministers and assistant ministers will come into effect from January, according to the 2008 Budget announced by the interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry.

Only interim Health Minister Dr Jona Senilagakali has indicated that he will not be in the new Cabinet while others are mum on their future.

Interim Minister for Public Enterprise, Public Service and Public Sector Reform Poseci Bune said some members of the Cabinet know where they are going, but are not saying anything unless the interim Prime Minister makes an announcement.
