Pest List Database Technician (PHAMA)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the position of Pestlist Database Technician to be based in SPC Suva. The appointee will be a member of the Biosecurity and Trade Facilitation (BAT) team involved in implementing component 4 of the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Program (PHAMA) funded by AUSAID. The program aims to address regulatory aspects of market access for highest priority products and issues. It will focus on high-value primary products (fresh and processed plants and animals) particularly agricultural and horticultural products.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the responsibility of the Biosecurity and Trade Facilitation Officer, the Pest List Database Technician will: Regularly update, and maintain the regional plant pest list database Disseminate database information to various clientele Liaise with national staff responsible for national PLDs to update country records Liaise with SPC technical specialists and specialists in other international, regional and national institutions to verify diagnostic records and other relevant information Update database through upgrading software programmes including distribution mapping features and digital imaging Provide training on use of software and database to Plant Protection and Biosecurity service agencies in PICTs Undertake other relevant duties on Biosecurity and trade issues

Experience and Qualifications:
A degree in agricultural/biological science; some field experience in plant protection, horticulture or environmental science or diploma with at least 3 years experience in Biosecurity related work Computer literacy with experience in database management and upgrading skills including GIS mapping 2
Understanding of basic statistics concepts Experience in developing training materials and organising training Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Knowledge of the role of SPC Biosecurity and Trade Support in protecting Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICT’s) biosecurity and the environment an advantage Working knowledge of animal health, entomology, botany or plant pathology an advantage; Good broad knowledge of Pacific Island agricultural systems

Salary, Terms and Conditions:

Commencing tax adjusted salary between $1,583 to $1,933 per month. The position is available immediately until 31 December 2013. Other local SPC staff benefits will apply.
