US, China, to 'work through' naval row
US, China, to 'work through' naval row Saturday December 01, 2007
The United States said Friday it still awaited China's reasons for turning some US warships away from Hong Kong but insisted the two powers would "work through" the simmering dispute.
"This incident has not prevented us from being able to work with the Chinese," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino. "And this is something that (the) two nations should be able to work through."
Asked whether Washington was toning down its rhetoric to avoid angering Beijing, Perino told reporters: "I don't think escalating it every day is necessary.
"We've been communicating with them and I am sure that we will be able to work it out with them. But that's why we are seeking a clarification from the other day and are working to make sure that this situation can be resolved."
