Fiji women face considerable challenges, says Australia's Global Ambassador for Women and Girls Penny Williams.

Williams, who is in the country as part of the International Women's Day celebrations, said women in many parts of the Pacific face considerable challenges.

She said globally one in three women will experience violence at the hands of men in their lifetime.

"Australia has been a strong supporter of projects in the Pacific that improve women’s rights and organisations that help victims of domestic violence in Fiji," she said in a statement.

She said she will see first-hand the work of several NGOs that provide support to women and families while here.

International Women’s Day will be celebrated tomorrow.
