As a nation, we are now horribly diverted into debating what is in the Charter, electoral reforms before elections, or what may be the economic growth rates this year and the next.
But the real
issue is: why have the Charter supporters developed collective amnesia about the treasonous over-throw

[Summary: This team has no doubt that the Charter will have some good elements. BUT given its origins and mode of enforcement, the Charter is not good for Fiji. Fiji cannot move forward by the
brute force of a military coup. The Charter supporters are simply

The Military Junta is in the process of creating a People’s Charter for Fiji.
The Charter’s objectives (ending racism and corruption and ensuring good governance) are praiseworthy.
And the
Charter has the support of eminent persons like Archbishop Mataca.
But the eminent persons forget the hard lesson of the 2000 crisis that

Continually repeating moral arguments, some political parties, religious organisations and normally law-abiding citizens may be leading Fiji’s tax-payers, down a financial nightmare.
In December
2006, the military removed a democratically elected government, claiming vote-rigging, ethnic bias, and corruption.

Who are the poorest in the country? Who are the largest groups of poor? How much “affirmative action” resources should government give to each group to close the “poverty gap?” In Fiji, these are
politically charged questions that are asked all the time.

Behind the pieces of paper and the hundreds of thousands of words that embody the 1997 Constitution, is the very real and hard political relationships between ethnic communities and their political
parties.
The pieces of paper and the words can be changed, and constitutions can be passed or abrogated.
But the very

The coups of 1987, 2000 and now 2006, have left our people deeply divided, with many changing legal sides.
No government ever established a commission of inquiry into the events of 1987 and 2000.
Nor into our national financial disasters like the National Bank of Fiji, the 1998
